I first want to tell you how excited I am to be the new Youth Sports Director for CCG at The Gathering Place. This personal and professional step is a long time in coming for me. My family and I moved to Greenwood 5½ years ago after a Missions stint in Mexico as Christian educators. I accepted a position from my previous employer, Pearson Education, and settled into the Greenwood area with my wife, Joy, and three awesome kids David, Edan, and Joelle (currently 13, 12, and 10).
After returning from missions, I knew God had a vision, but he left me at Pearson a while to spend some time building that in me. I recently left Pearson in August as the Regional Vice President of Sales. During my time there, he helped me understand how to lead and manage people and strategically build vision for a team.
God also planted us at Greenwood Christian Church and I have spent the last four years there on the Sports Ministry Leadership team and as the Director of the Youth Soccer program. During that time, I came to learn and appreciate the ability of sports ministry to build bridges between the community and the church. We actually joined the church after coaching a basketball team with a member who invited us to his life group. That single act of sports outreach brought us into a faith community, and that is why I am excited about what we can do together at CCG and The Gathering Place.
Through sports ministry we are given an avenue to engage the unbelieving and believing world with the Gospel and the love that is characteristic only of the Body of Christ. It is amazing how eternal relationships can be built coaching together, playing together, and purposely investing in a shared interest (our kids' sports) that can lead people to Jesus.
While I am excited to be a new part of the CCG team, I am bringing a great team with me. My wife Joy and I met while working together at Wheeler Mission 18 years ago and will celebrate our 16 year anniversary this summer. As mentioned, we have three wonderful children who love sports and the Lord. My wife and I both have degrees from Moody Bible Institute. I also worked as an urban educator in the Chicago Public Schools while finishing my Master’s from Moody. We have a passion for engaging people from diverse walks of life with the love of Jesus Christ and we can’t wait to do that with the CCG family!
